Birds Count!

Yep, it's time once again to dust off those binoculars and prime the backyard bird feeders with seed and suet in preparation for the Great Backyard Bird Count, which asks bird watchers in the United States and Canada to count birds in their own backyards and communities over the weekend of February 17-20.

Now that we have a brand new back yard, I'd better get to work! I'll be putting out a bird feeder or two today to see who shows up. So far I've mostly seen crows, seagulls, and starlings in the big field across the street. I'm hoping the feeders will attract a few more feathered friends including chickadees, towhees, juncos, and nuthatches... I don't expect to see the variety that I did out in the Coastal Hills, but it will be interesting to see who the "city birds" are.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event in the United States and Canada that starts Friday, February 17. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts, and you only count birds that you are familiar with and can positively identify. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds.
