Cat Lady No. 149...In Memory of Samantha Jo

Cat Lady and Vet Tech Deb and her special needs adoptees Skagit, Puget, and Tigger are missing a very special friend. Fantastic Feline Samantha Jo came into Deb's life over 15 years ago and stole her heart. Here is her story:

"She was an awesome little love. Sam was the first cat that I had in my adult life and together we had many life adventures. She came to me as a rescue, found by a five-year-old child who was walking in the woods behind the family farm. I, who was unsure of whether or not, I wanted a cat, because I had a cockatiel at the time, went out to meet her.

"The family had her in a horse barn tucked in a rabbit hutch. For some odd reason, I opened the door, sat down, and called out her name...Sam. She came right to me and sat on my lap and immediately purred. She captured my heart with her big green eyes and the copper spot on the top of her head, which through time, affectionately became known as her 'kissing spot.'

"She adored anything with strings, loved white frosted raspberry filled donuts, and snuggled every night on my lap. The best time of our day was belly massage time.

"Here's to all the wonderful adventures together--I couldn't have had a better friend!"

Cat Lady No. 145 and Cat Lad No. 146...Special Occasion

The family has assembled today for a special portrait to celebrate the 9th anniversary of Cat Lady Shannon and Pet Person John!

Feline Friends Django, Nina, and Jesse, and their canine sidekick Sophie want to wish the happy couple a wonderful celebration filled with beautiful memories.

One of those beautiful memories includes a story from Shannon:

"When I was 19 years old, I moved into my first apartment, and the person whose lease I was taking over left a tiny grey stripey cat behind. He decided that I belonged to him, and I named him Vinny. A year ago, after 13 wonderful years together, Vinny died of kidney failure.

"Losing Vinny was really sad, but my husband and I decided that life was for the living, and we wanted to adopt new little cat friends. A few weeks later, we found two kittens who were brother and sister at the local animal shelter (which is a kill facility), and even though I wasn't 100% ready, these little ones needed a home. What made this extra surprising was that the little male cat had the same grey spiral pattern as Vinny. We named them Django and Nina, and they have added so much joy to our lives."

Okay now everybody, it's time for your family portrait. Say cheese!

Cat Lady No. 144...Counting Butterflies

Cat Lady Emilia and feline friend Tangerine have found a brand new butterfly to identify.

It's not likely they will run out of new butterflies to discover. Check out these statistics, courtesy of
www.naba.org

"How many kinds of butterflies are there?

"There are approximately 20,000 species of butterflies in the world. About 725 species have occurred in North American north of Mexico, with about 575 of these occurring regularly in the lower 48 states of the United States, and with about 275 species occurring regularly in Canada. Roughly 2000 species are found in Mexico."

Cat Lady No. 143 ...Counting Cat Years

Cat Lady Amber and Himalayan Cat Mom Suki are enjoying the newest additions to the household--Gemini twins!

Amber believes that because there are 7 cat years per human year,every cat should get to celebrate 7 times per calendar year; coming out to a new celebration every 7-1/2 weeks or so.

The twins will be weaned in a few weeks--just in time for their first celebration. Amber recently found a recipe for Cat Birthday Cake that she can't wait to try out...She'll save the party hats and favors for their 2nd celebration...it won't be a very long wait.

Cat Lady No. 142...Doodle Mania

According to Cat Lady Cora, if there's one thing more fun than a barrel of kittens, it's doodling. She spent most of her school years doodling in the margins of her notebook paper. That's why she is so excited to have found a great little website called Sketch Swap.

Using your cursor, you draw a little doodle or sketch, and once you submit it, you get to see a doodle or sketch from somebody else being drawn on the screen. Cora is always delighted and surprised because you never know what you will receive in return!

She highly recommends that you give it a try, just for fun. Either that, or get a barrel of kittens.

Cat Lady No. 141...Who Was Your Favorite Teacher ?

The 365 Cat Ladies Giveaway for May has Cat Lady Cassie reminiscing about her favorite school teacher.

It would have to be her Junior High Algebra teacher who introduced Cassie and her best friend, Rhoda, to the world of science fiction. Miss Watson had an extensive collection of paperback books by Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury, which she would loan out to the girls--because the school library did not have any science fiction books on its shelves!

Feline Friend Esmerelda is wondering what Cassie waiting for! If she posts a comment about her favorite teacher, she'll be entered to win a Cat Lady tote bag...

Cat Lady 139...Cat and Mouse

Cat Lady Rita knows better than to leave the triplets--Salsa, Taquito, and Margarita--unattended with her computer.

They already spend way too much time jumping around at the cursor every time Rita moves the mouse, and it's just a matter of time before they make the connection and figure out how to work the mouse ... Then before she knows it, the triplets will be demanding to Twitter or to be stars of their own blog.

Case in point: Janet Cox, web-savvy feline.

Janet resides with cat-slave and British writer Tom Cox, author of "Under The Paw". Janet has his own page on Facebook (yes, Janet is a he) with over 2600 friends. Janet recently interviewed another feline web sensation, Sockington the cat, who has 522,668 followers on Twitter. Read this fascinating interview and see pictures at:

Cat Ladies and Lads, consider yourself warned. Keep that mouse under lock and key when the kitties are unattended.

Cat Lady No. 138...Spring Cleaning

Cat Lady Dominique and Tuxedo Tom have been best buddies since the day they first shared a tuna sandwich together. Today they are working together on cleaning out the garage.

Dominique is wondering how in the world she ever accumulated so many boxes of junk!

Tuxedo Tom is wondering where his catnip mousie is, and is inspecting every nook and cranny inside each box as it is opened.

Dominique recently visited an interesting website called "The Story of Stuff " and vowed to become a more responsible consumer when it comes to "stuff".

The only thing Tuxedo Tom wants to consume is a tuna sandwich. Is it lunch time yet?

Cat Lady No. 135...Puzzle Time

Cat Lady Brigitte and sidekick Lorenzo like nothing better on a Sunday evening than working a jigsaw puzzle.

Lorenzo's job is to push puzzle pieces around the table a bit to make sure they are not actually bugs or mice in disguise, and then he curls up inside the box lid while Brigitte fits the pieces together.

Brigitte recently found a series of fun Animal Planet jigsaw puzzles that can be played right on the computer and feature images of different cats:
FELINE FACTS PUZZLES

While Lorenzo was disappointed that these virtual puzzles did not include a box lid, he eventually conceded that sitting in Brigitte's lap was just as cozy, if not more so.

Enjoy!

Cat Lady No. 134...Huggable

Cat Crazy Darci Ann can't resist hugging her favorite fluffball Frankie Fuzzface. He is particularly silky and huggable after his monthly bath, something often recommended for Persian cats.

The art of cat-bathing is particularly challenging, considering that water and cats usually don't mix. And then there is that matter of very sharp teeth and claws.

At first Frankie Fuzzface felt that being wet was very undignified. But he decided it was worth the indignity, once he discovered the joy of blow-drying...

Darci Ann found some useful tips for cat grooming at this website:

Cat Lady No. 133...Fish Food

Cat Purrson Mizuki and her feline friend Yamato are particularly fond of sharing sushi for dinner.

After dining, they often enjoy an evening of origami, the Japanese art of folding paper into shapes representing objects
.

Yamato's favorite part is to sit on top of the paper, while Mizuki creases and folds the beautifully patterned squares.

Here are instructions for one of their favorites:

Cat Lady No. 132...Teacher's Pet

Soon-to-graduate college student Alanis is studying for her last final exam with the help of Library Cat Sylvester. Failing the final exam would be unthinkable, as she is looking forward to her graduation ceremony in two weeks, and wearing that striking blue cap and gown that she was just fitted for...

Thank goodness Sylvester is keeping her focused and helping out with an occasional neck and shoulder massage...

Otherwise, her mind might wander to the time she visited the world's largest mortar board, or graduation cap. It's in Columbus Ohio and the aluminum sculpture weighs 5 tons and was suspended in mid-air over Rich Street in 2003 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Franklin University. Cat Lady No. 130...Feline Sleepwear DeMystified

Cat Lady Reba and Cat Mom Velveteen think that new arrival Kitten Ritz is the cat's pajamas.

I'm sure you know all about curiosity and its profound effect on cats; but did you know that the "need to know" is even worse for Cat Ladies?

That's why Reba could not stop herself from looking up the meaning behind the phrase "the cat's pajamas"; and it's exactly why you, dear Cat Lady, will not be able to resist looking at this link:

Cat Lady No. 129... Cat Mom Extraordinaire

Cat Mom Sue has her hands and her house full with her beautiful adoptees... So many that only eight of eleven grown cats (and miscellaneous kittens destined for new homes) could fit in the picture!

As daughter Jona explains: "People wonder how you end up with so many cats. It all started with 2 strays that she adopted when they snuck into the house ... Turned out they were both pregnant, and it just snowballed from there.

"...A funny thing to see is at dinner time. My mom will pick up all the food dishes from the floor, and they know its time to eat! I came home one day to see all 11 cats sitting on the table watching her dish out he food. They are all family members and they all get an individual hello and head rub when we come home... Our home definitely wouldn't be the same without them."

Cat Lady No. 127 and Cat Lad No. 128...To Nurture Is Her Nature

A nurturing nature comes naturally to Cat Lady Toni...Cat Mom to Maya and Toola, and wife to Cat Lad Gary.

Here's the scoop from loving daughter Laura:

"My parents are vegetarians who love all animals.

"They live on a lake and feed the ducks and geese who are like their pets. My mom even feeds the squirrels daily.

"She has a particular devotion to St. Francis who she asked for help when both her cats (but particularly the calico) were very sick. They are 100% back to 'normal' now. "

Here is the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi,
which pretty much sums up Motherhood (and Fatherhood too!) in a beautiful nutshell:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

Last year Abigail received a beautiful handmade "pop-up" card from her middle child.

Cat Lady No. 126...Birding Buddies

Cat Lady Mimi is enjoying an afternoon with precious pets Griswold and Griselda, indulging in their favorite pastime together:

Birdwatching!

Laura puts what she calls "bird bait" in the feeders outside, and then once back inside, the three of them watch through the big picture window that looks out onto the back yard garden.

Today they saw goldfinches, purple finches, a red-winged blackbird, Stellers jays, chickadees, and a song sparrow! Griswold and Griselda get particularly quiet and twitchy when they spot their favorite, a rufous-sided towhee.

Laura has discovered a great new website from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that is just packed with great information for the beginning birder and how to identify your newest feathered friends-- just click on the logo:
