Cat Lady No. 118...When I'm 64

As the newest members of the
Society for the Preservation and Advancement of Waltzing with Cats, Cat Lady Janice and her calico cutie Ophelia spend a lot of time practicing their slow dance steps. But their first love is be-bopping to Beatles music.

Though she doesn't realize it, Janice has had a crush on Paul for almost half a century. Like all of the other girls, she thought he was the cutest Beatle, and never dreamed that he (or she) would actually grow old, even when singing along to the song "When I'm 64".

And although decades have seemingly whizzed by, Janice doesn't mind. She and Ophelia will continue to waltz, and be-bop, and dream of marrying Paul someday...as she imagines the cutest Beatle helping her to blow out 64 candles in just a few short weeks...

Cat Lady No. 116 and Cat Lad No. 117...Star Struck

It was in the stars.

When Amy and Paul met at graduate school, they were both earning their degrees in Space Studies. Amy went on to become a librarian by day, and a science fiction writer by night. Paul became a planetary scientist for NASA and when they married, they imagined having two big dogs some day.

But 11 years ago the planets aligned purrfectly when they found a sick little kitten [Casey] in the parking lot of their building.

"We thought we'd take him to the vet and get him fixed right back up and then find him a home, but three months later we were still giving him daily medicine and by then he was ours, of course!

"Then we adopted a sister for him [RaeAnn], then noticed all the ferals in the parking lot and decided to trap a couple of them (for neuter and re-release, but that's not how it worked out, of course!). Then we became known as the neighborhood cat people"..... Agamemnon, Kira, Pixel, Precious, and Jean-Luc thought their new home was just out of this world!

RaeAnn, who is the confirmed mama's girl of the group , hopes you will support your favorite local animal shelter. Her favorite is: Best Friends Animal Society

Thanks for visiting and Live Long and Prosper!

Cat Lady No. 115...Theatrics

Illustration Friday
(theme:"theater" )

Humphrey unequivocally enjoys his Sunday afternoon re-enactments of Masterpiece Theater with Cat Lady Ruth Ann; and yet today, for some inexplicable reason, his mind is bewitched and beset with wild and untamed dreams of the pheasant hunt rather than jolly parlor room theatrics.

Cat Lady No. 114...Bookworm Birthdays

Librarian and Cat Lady Kari enjoys reading aloud to the neighorhood kids at Storytime Hour with the help of Library Cat Skittles...

Today is a special story day because it is Skittles' birthday, and Kari is reading Happy Birthday To You
by Dr. Seuss. The book tells about a fantastic land called Katroo, where the Birthday Bird throws everyone an amazing party on their special day. The book itself is having its 50th birthday this year!

After Kari finishes reading the story, Skittles and the kids will visit Seussville on the library computers --an interactive site with lots of fun and games and interesting stories about Dr. Seuss. There is even a Storybook Maker that helps you write your own illustrated storybook with the help of Horton (of Hears a Who fame).

Skittles is fairly certain that if she daintily walks across each and every keyboard, she will get to be the star of at least one storybook. It is her birthday, after all...

Cat Lady 113...Tree Huggers

In honor of Arbor Day today, Cat Lady Darla and her feline friends Bob and Lou not only hugged a tree, they climbed up into it and enjoyed a little bird watching beneath the leafy canopy.

Bob had flashbacks to kittenhood and the first time he climbed a tree...the fear of going down, the urge to keep going up, the two cold and lonely nights in the tippy top of the tree before the firemen came with the ladder. Bob shuddered a little and was quite content to stay on the lower branches with Darla and Lou and count the robins from there...

To find out more about Arbor Day and why trees are important to cat ladies, cats, and every other breathing creature on the planet, please visit this site:

Cat Lady No. 111...Oceans Need Love Too

Terra firma gets the lion's share of attention on Earth Day, but Mermaid Cat Lady Luana and Cha-Cha, her Cat Fish, would like equal time for the oceans of the planet.

Luana and Cha-Cha enjoy star gazing on warm summer evenings, but the swirls of trash floating on the surface of the sea are starting to obliterate the view. And just last week Cha-Cha got tangled up in a plastic bag and nearly became lunch for a passing shark!

The
Ocean Conservancy has lots of useful information and great programs to address the problems facing our oceans. In September, nearly 400,000 volunteers at 6,485 sites in 104 countries and 42 U.S. states picked up trash along the world's coastlines and waterways during the annual International Coastal Cleanup - and they collected more than 6.8 million pounds of trash.

Luana and Cha-Cha hope you will reduce, re-use, and recycle and help to keep trash out of their home!

Cat Lady No. 110...Go Hug A Tree and Thank John Muir

Cat Lady Cora Beth and LuLu are card carrying Tree Huggers and proud of it. That's why today they are celebrating the birthday of John Muir...naturalist, conservationist, founder of the Sierra Club, and Father of our National Parks.

Here is one of their favorite quotes by Mr Muir:

Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer. Camp out among the grasses and gentians of glacial meadows, in craggy garden nooks full of nature's darlings. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings, Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is c
losed, but nature's sources never fail.

Cat Lady No. 109...Quiz Queen

Cat Lady Monique and Marmalade Tabby Cat Pierre try to stay fit and trim with daily exercise but both have a weakness for French pastries.

They enjoy mental exercise too, and Monique can't pass up a quiz. Today Delta took the "How Green is Your Cuisine?" quiz and didn't find out much about French pastries, but learned why it's good to buy local and in season, and why eating red meat is not always earth-friendly.

She also took the "How Green is Your Workout?" quiz and resolved to do more of her errands by bicycle.

Pierre prefers to get his workout by leaping about at the drapery cords, which has no impact on the environment whatsoever. The drapes? Well that's another matter entirely...

Cat Lady No. 108...Are You Green? Take the Quizzes!

Cat Lady Delta has made many new friends during her first year at college, but she looks forward every weekend to going home and getting a hug from Best Friend Mr. Muggles.

This weekend, Delta and Mr. Muggles spent some time taking some fun quizzes in honor of Earth Day.

Delta took the "How Green is Your Dorm Room?" quiz and found out it needs some work. Like using a portable fan instead of a portable air conditioner. And using a compact fluorescent lamp instead of an incandescent lamp.

She helped Mr. Muggles take the "How Green is Your Seafood?" quiz and found out they have some work to do there too.

Some more fun quizzes include:
How Green is Your Laundry?
How Green is Your Love Life?
How Green is Your Bathroom?
and the always popular How Green Is Your Pirate Ship?

Enjoy!

Cat Lady No. 107...Terrific Tigger

As National Library Week comes to a close, Cat Lady and School Librarian Debbie reminds us of the tremendous contributions and devoted service that Library Cats bring to the library experience:

"Tigger was given to us by a student after his Mom heard we were looking for a cat. Tigger went home with me every day riding draped across my shoulder and the headrest. One teacher told me it looked like I was always talking on a furry cell phone. Each morning when I arrived at school I would open the car door and he would jump out and walk up the sidewalk to the side door of the school. When it was opened he always went straight to the library door.

"Tigger loved to sleep on the circulation desk. I told the students that his extra toes on his front paws helped him turn the book pages better.

"We had Tigger Mail at the school and students would write to Tigger. His mailbox was usually overflowing. As his secretary, I answered each letter he received. He gave out advice about friendships, suggested books for the students to read, praised their accomplishments, and sometimes even helped with homework questions.

"Tigger, the library cat that had been at our school for 10 years, died from kidney failure on March 5.

We are all heartbroken at our loss.

"If you have never visited the library cat webpage go to www.ironfrog.com and see the library cats worldwide. Our Tigger is with the Alabama cats, at Smiths Station Intermediate School."

Thanks Debbie!

Cat Lady No. 106...Nature Girls

Cat Lady Felicity and her feline friend Timika are nature lovers.

In honor of Earth day on April 22, Felicity will be spending the day helping to clear invasive plants on a nature preserve, an activity sponsored by The Nature Conservancy.

The mission of The Nature Conservancy is "to preserve the plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive".

Timika will be spending the day helping to clear invasive skittering critters from her own backyard, including lizards and field mice. Lucky for the critters, Timika's mission is to give them a run for their money, then let them go. Almost always.

Cat Lady No. 103...Re-use, Reduce, Recycle!

Feline Fanatic Carmina and Gato Florentino enjoy spending time each morning in the greenhouse tending los flores y las verduras.

Carmina and Florentino also enjoy finding new and unusual ways to re-use, reduce and recycle things in the household and garden. They were recently delighted to find this great website:

ToiletPaper Rolls, PaperTowel Rolls and Wrapping Paper Rolls... Waste, Recycle or Reuse?

Carmina found step-by-step instructions for making biodegradable starting pots for seedlings out of paper tubes. Florentino was particularly interested in the section about the hamster and his new paper tube toy.

Cat Lady No. 102...Pesky Pests No More

Cat Lady Kara often enjoys spending quality time in her flower garden with tabby cat Daisy Mae and her adorable kitten Abner.

Sometimes Kara finds pesky bugs and weeds in the garden, but you won't find any pesticides or herbicides nearby. Here are 10 reasons why, as provided by the Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides:

1. Pesticides rarely solve pest problems, they only delay them temporarily
2. They are hazardous to human health (ever read the warning labels?)
3. They cause special problems for children, whose growing and developing bodies can be particularly vulnerable.
4. Pesticides often contaminate our fruits and vegetables.

5. Pesticides are hazardous to farmers and farmworkers who have prolonged exposure to the toxins.
6. Pesticides are hazardous to your cats and kittens, not to mention other pets.
7. Pesticides "travel" and easily find their way into our water and air.
8. Pesticides are hazardous to fish and birds in the wild, who are particularly sensitive to toxins.
9. Pesticide safety-testing is often sponsored or conducted by the same corporations that profit from their use.
10. Pesticides are known poisons to many life forms! Yet the manufacturers have a lot of "trade secrets" that the public does not have access to.

Earth Day is almost here. Ready to go organic? Here is a link to useful fact sheets with very effective and non-toxic ways to deal with a multitude of bugs and weeds, without using pesticides:

Cat Lady No. 101...Earth Day

School librarian and Cat Lady Patti enjoys sharing a book about recycling with library cat Arnold. She is busy setting up a special book display with an Earth Day theme.

She was recently surprised to learn that there are actually TWO Earth Days.

The first was a tradition founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969, and is observed around the world on the March equinox.

The second Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, and is observed on April 22 of each year.

Patti and Arnold hope that their students will be inspired to make every day Earth Day. Patti has gathered together a great assortment of books to introduce her kids to issues such as pollution, over-population, climate change, and species extinction; and she hopes they will begin to think about creative solutions involving renewable resources, conservation, alternative energy, and more...

Arnold will be doing his part by enjoying a nice nap in the solar power that streams throu
gh the library window each afternoon at two p.m...

Cat Lady No. 100...A Whale of a Tail

Mermaid Cat Lady Merrilee and her Cat Fish Whiskers have never seen a blue whale, but hope to someday. Blue whales are an endangered species. Merilee looked them up in National Geographic:

"Blue whales are the largest animals ever known to have lived on Earth.

"These magnificent marine mammals rule the oceans at up to 100 feet (30 meters) long and upwards of 200 tons (181 metric tons).

"Their tongues alone can weigh as much as an elephant. Their hearts, as much as an automobile."

Right now Merilee and Whiskers are spotting a lot gray whales along the Pacific Coast. Peak numbers usually occur during the last week of March with a 2nd peak during the last week of April with about 6 whales an hour passing Oregon .

Check out the numbers for this spring here: Whale Watching Center

Cat Lady No. 99...Easter Secrets

Cat Lady and High School Cafeteria Dietician Jordan adores HoneyBunch, her Calico Persian Fluffball. Both are watching their waistlines by eating sensible, lowfat diets. Except for this week.

Jordan has a deep dark secret that only Fluffball knows: The dietician has a weakness for Peeps. When preparing the Easter baskets for the grandkids, filled with whole grain carrot muffins and actual carrots, she also includes a generous assortment of Peeps, to the delight of the youngsters. What the grandkids don't know is that only about half of the Peeps ever make it into the baskets.

Jordan's secret is safe with Fluffball. You won't hear a peep out of her...

Cat Lady No. 97...Purr-forming Arts

Cat Lady Ilamae marvels at how Mr. Rumbles sounds just like a freight train full of gravel when he purrs.

He purrs loudest when he and Ilamae dance in three-four time, and recently Mr. Rumbles won a blue ribbon for the loudest purr at a recent meeting of the
Society for the Preservation and Advancement of Waltzing with Cats.

Domestic cats purr in a frequency of 25 to 150 vibrations per second, but there doesn't seem to be any consensus as to how or why cats purr.

Purrcast is a collection of soothing little podcasts that consist of the sound of cats purring. The website includes information on each feline purr-former.

Cat Lady No. 94...Time To Sow

Green Thumb Cat Lady Freeda and feline friend BeeBee enjoy growing sunflowers each summer, then saving the seeds to feed the backyard birds during the winter months.

Now that spring has arrived, it's time to take the last handful of seeds and to start a whole new crop. Freeda knows better than to plant them outside, because the blue jays or the chipmunks will just dig them up.

Instead, she and BeeBee will
put them in some soil in the greenhouse, and plant them outside in a few weeks when the seed has magically transformed itself into a stem and leaves and roots.

Would you like free seeds to grow your own sunflowers and help collect important data about bees? Then join in this fun project sponsored by researchers at San Francisco State University:

Cat Lady No. 93...Door Greeters

Cat Lady Jennifer is always thrilled to be greeted at the door by Cat Mom Pumpkin and her adorable orange tabby twins, recently adopted from a local shelter!

Today Jennifer went on a Volks Walk sponsored by the American Volkssport Association, a network of walking clubs.

The walk took her through the countryside to a daffodil farm, with hundreds of other walkers also enjoying the spring day. After being cooped up all winter it was nice to stretch her legs.

But now home, it's good to put up her feet with a lap full of purring tabbies...

Redheaded Cat Lady Lucia adores her matching cat, Rachel.

Whatever you want to call it: redhead, carrot top, titian, auburn, or in the case of Rachel: ginger, marmalade, red or orange...they both agree that it is very special to have gloriously coppery flame-colored tresses, or fur, whichever the case may be.

It is characterized by high levels of the r
eddish pigment pheomelin and relatively low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin. Approximately 1% to 2% of the human population has red hair. Statistics are not in yet for the cat population.
